. In case you are suffering from any disease those effects your diet like PKU (phenylketonuria), then be in constant touch with your doctor to take care of your diet.

5. Keep yourself away from people suffering from flu or any other communicable infections.

Playing Vivaldi music reduces stress among premature babies

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Vivaldi

They say music is soul to the ear…and this old adage is coming to the rescue of a maternity hospital, which is using classical Vivaldi music to relax premature babies. This came forth as a revolutionary technique aimed to reduce stress among the preemies. The project’s music expert is Mauricio Linori.

The main objective of the research is to do away with the stress that the premature babies have to go through once they come out of the safe, relaxing surroundings of the womb much before they are good enough to deal with the world outside. The main aim of the therapy is to increase the sleep hours that give babies an environment that is closest to that of the womb.

The nurses pipe music into the incubators and observe the babies’ reactions and to know other benefits (if any) of the music therapy, which include:

Physical benefits: weight gain in case of under weight babies.
Social Benefits: improvement in baby-parent relationship
Lowered cardiac rhythm and improved breathing

Baby Drop Box receives a kid rather than a baby

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

storks-cradle.jpg

 The baby drop box in
Japan called the “Stork’s Cradle” that we talked about sometime back, got a drop finally the very day it was installed.
The baby is a preschooler aged 3, who was dropped by his father. “I came with Daddy,” said the little kid. The father was spotted coming in holding the baby’s hand as he approached the hospital.

Sankei Newspaper said, “We must rethink the meaning of the baby drop-off,” “Unlike a baby, a toddler may suffer from trauma. This little boy must be experiencing great loneliness.” This was because the Drop box was intended to reduce the number of infanticides, abortions and was meant only for receiving newborns who were small enough to not remember their past, and not for kids who might get affected by this kind of an act of their parents.

Child Rape means death penalty in Texas

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

Death PenaltyChild Rape laws in
Texas have been revised towards the stricter side. According to the revised rules, sex offenders who are convicted two times for raping children under 14 would be not be considered for any other punishment other than a death penalty.

This regulation got an approval on Friday, following which the State House passed the bill. Apart from this rule, another bill creates another new category: continual sexual abuse of a young child or children, carrying a minimum penalty of 25 years to life in prison.

It seems a correct move as, there can be no better way to make a country safe for kids and dangerous for offenders other than by issuing punishment as strict as these. Moreover, life imprisonment or any other punishment cannot even suffice to the emotional and psychological trauma that a child has to go through.

Secondhand smoke and low birth-weight babies: Deadly combo

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

second hand smoke

If you have given birth to a baby who weighs less than 5.5 pounds at the time of birth, then you have to extra cautious while taking his care, informs a Dutch study. Make sure he is not exposed to second-hand smoke, since a low birth weight baby is more vulnerable to succumb to respiratory disorders including coughing, wheezing and pulmonary infections up to age five.

“Size and maturity are major factors in the development of the lung. In children with diminished prenatal growth, and consequently low birth weight, a disturbed lung development is associated with a relatively small airway caliber. This can cause decreased lung function and more respiratory symptoms later in life,” opined Dr. Johan C. de Jongste, a professor in the department of pediatric respiratory medicine at Erasmus MC/Sophia Children’s Hospital

Though exposure to smoke is equally harmful at the higher age but the extent of risk and association between birth weight and respiratory symptoms decreases as the baby grows up the age of five years.Via: Forbes

Unborn babies under criminal scrutiny

Unborn Baby

It seems the British government actually took it to heart when Children’s Commissioner Sir Al Aynsley-Green, claimed Britain as one of the worst countries in the developed world for a child to survive…thanks to the way adults ‘demonize’ the kids here.

With a view to repair the loss, the government is all set to introduce a scheme wherein pregnant women whose unborn babies have been judged to be at risk of criminal behavior and social exclusion will be targeted. There will be a Nurse-family partnership to break the vicious circle of disadvantaged families by identifying those most in need of support early on.

The mothers will be advised on diet, exercise and parenting skills in order to improve upon the tiny lives which otherwise end up being the most vulnerable members of the society while growing up and the unwanted elements as adults.
